im looking for a guitar around about the £300 to £400 mark which is not of the strat or les paul shape as i already have a couple of those and i want something different
this would have to be a high gain guitar, the scale must be above 25" as i drop tune to drop a/drop b (this doesnt include 7 strings)
the sort of shape im looking for is either the ironbird, v, warrior, explorer (esp version),
I DONT WANT WARLOCK OR BEAST
i would also be willing to trade for my jackson ke3, or i will pay cash, or cash and trade depending on the guitar,
it must be of good quality, fully functional, NO PROJECTS,

That's a tricky find.
I have a Maverick X1 I was thinking of selling (wedding saving is making me poor). Floating bridge 6-er, great condition (just needs a bit of a clean which I'll do before I sell it), got a couple of nicks in the body but nowhere immediately visible, and I've got a proper hardcase for it which set me back a fair few quid. This guitar is such a doofus shape that standard cases don't fit it, so I can include that into the equation if you like.
The only downsides - firstly, it's a 25" scale neck (not above), but probably the nicest neck I've ever played. Super thin and fast. Secondly, the pickups aren't *that* hot (still just got the stock pickups in it).
Upside is that I'd take less than £300 (probably closer to that with the case though), so you've got some pennies to spend on a pickup
I can post pictures if necessary. Let me know if you want to have a ganders at it - I live in Norwich and practice at Plug on Kingsway so could bring it down there if you were interested.

That is a pretty big ask - Bareknuckles are out on anything new, as a pair is already half your budget gone. Stock guitars with EMGs are normally overly pricey too. As a side note, there's no such thing as a "high gain" pickup - there is high output, but they're very different things (I realise you probably know that, I'm just making the point). SD Alnico Pros and JBs are great p'ups for metal, and neither are that hot. EMGs aren't even particularly high output, but they're essentially compressed so they give the impression of being louder (at the detriment of clean tone).
Scale-wise, all 24 fret ESPs are 25.5", Schecters are only 24.75", but there are plenty of people playing them in B or A - you just need to put proper strings on it - a good 60 for the low E for 24.75".
For that kind of price-range, your best bet is just getting a new Ltd. V or Ex, and replace the p'ups.

Steve
im aware that bareknuckle dont come in anything new but someone may have upgraded their pickups and its was used as an example, i know its high output but for some reason i put high gain :S (i just gave advice about an amp on different forum)
i have a jb and jazz in my jackson ke3, pretty good but looking for something different, they dont handle shred that well, much too meaty, but still very good,
the scale was advice i got from a friend, i use a ibanez s320 and thats in drop a so it didnt really matter anyway,
cheers for the advice though man, i learnt something about emg pickups (Y)
EMG's are not compressed, they just have a very focused dynamic range, they appear to be louder because you set them closer to the strings because of the lack of magnetic field. Throught the right amp and with knowledgable EQing they can sound very open and raw.
My recommendation for pick-ups would be the dimarzio x2n, crunch lab or d-activator x, all great pick-ups for drop tuning and high gain applications. Seymour duncans tend to lose the definition under extreme definition, which is fine if you're going for a sludgydoomy type sound but for articulate riffing, slick leads and chunky rythm work you ned a pick-up that compensates for the loss of volume and attack in the string due to string tension. I've never been overly impressed with bare-knuckles in person, apart from the pain killer humbucker, that seems to have a cool voicing but the rest of the range is just a bit meh.
Guitar wise, being an Ibanez endorsee i'd obviously recommend them, the Xiphos is a cool shape thats also well balanced and comes in some good pick-up configurations, they can also be had for some good deals on the internet at the moment.

I'd second the d-activator choice.
Just as an aside, I have a SD JB in my Epi SG and it's got a great tone and perfect gain for tight metal (not very hot, but a really nice attack on it, and really clear). Not sure how it would perform for seriously dropped work though. _________________
