Two amazing theremin players.

Lydia uses a rare and practically unobtainable model called a TVox Tour.

(The other one is a Gakken.)

Laughing I keep thinking about buying a Theremin but I have a feeling that the weird standing cat could do a better job than me.

I've been trying to figure out what the cheapest thing is you could play as an instrument. Probably something like the Burns B3. Separate volume aerial and stable calibration are a must. It was depressing when I first looked this up and found people recommending the £350 Moog Etherwave as a beginner's instrument. I think the cat shows real potential, but ultimately it will struggle to deliver a convincing performance with a Gakken theremin.

The Paia Theremax kit is another possibility for a novice, though ultimately you'll need a Wavefront...

I saw these guys doing some weird shit with sensors when I went to The Vortex for a free improv thingy. If you look at the percussionist at around the 8min mark on this video you can see the sensors that he is using:

I think you could make something quite cheap. One of the technicians here used some software to track the forms in one of my animations in order to shape the sound. Maybe he's the kind of person who would know how to make something akin to a theremin.

I'm pretty sure I remember someone on here making one in the shape of a gnome, which made an appearance on a dvd by a certain Bill Bailey.

Check out Clara Rockmore, considered one of the best theremin players in the world (well, not anymore, she's dead init), and the Day the Earth Stood Still soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann (though he didn't actually play the theremin, it's an awesome soundtrack and the theremin on that album is classic!).

Hah, yeah that was me yeeaarrss ago: http://www.thereminworld.com/gal_gnome.asp

I've made another theremin since then.. except it was a MIDI controller that used a D-Beam for pitch and a breath controller for volume.. was quite an interesting little project Smile

Yeah, Clara was also pretty good. In fact the two of them performed a duet.

Could probably be done using a webcam and some brightly coloured sticks, Or maybe even a wiimote and some IR LED's.
