Perhaps a bit of a long shot, but i'm in the market for a Gretsch Pro Jet in black, in good condition for about £200 - if anyone knows of one going i'd be very interested in hearing about it.
Thats what i tour with, easily the best built guitar on the market for less than £600 i'd say. Machineheads are shit but i whacked on some locking grovers and now its solid as a rock. I'm looking for a gold one now for a live back-up.

Cheers for that - out of curiosity - are the machine heads a fairly standard footprint, or will they require doweling/refinishing & re-drilling? _________________ http://www.hamptonguitartech.co.uk/

you'll need to open the holes out a bit and the headstock is also very thick from front to back so you will need longer bushes than standard or thinner washers. In all honesty it was a fucking pig to do but an essential upgrade! Its also worth re-cutting the saddles with a slightly deeper and more uniform groove, as theres not much tension running to the tail piece.
Seriously though, i'd rate the build better than current Gibsons, it makes Epiphones look dodgy as Winehouses eyes! The Humbuckers on it are incredible too, yeah theyre a bit noisy but they sound fantastic and are very easy to set up.

No longer looking - just bought a silver double jet (tbh, that's what I was really after just didnt think I could afford one) for a fantastic price - genuinely wonderful. _________________ http://www.hamptonguitartech.co.uk/

Timmy, just as a follow-up - i'm in the process of overahuling the double jet I bought - one major thing worth looking at, if you havent already is I found the bridge studs to be mega-loose & wobbly - not particuarly good for intonation or tuning stability.
I put some ptfe threead seal tape on them & theyre solid now - definitely take a look at your own if you get the chance - the tuners on this guitar seem ok but tuning stability was poor, i'l probably edit this post in a few days when i've finished overhauling it & let you know what worked out. _________________ http://www.hamptonguitartech.co.uk/

Yeah, mine has a bigsby - is the hardware much different between the two?
I've got the trapeze tail on mine so the bridge doesnt get much opportunity to work itself loose. I think the hardware is pretty much identical.

Unfortunately not - my router wont be on order for a month or so & i'l need some time to play with it (rather sad, I templated out some guitars ages ago & dont yet have the router to cut them - I spent my cash on an ampmaker kit)
Naturally you'l need to plug the original hole & re-finish as the route is really wide (very similar width though) which wouldnt be particuarly cheap - I guess the alternative is to make some funky pickup rings, but that would require the pickguard to be modified also, again not cheap =/
regarding the previous discussion on setup - I gutted most of the guitar, a new bone nut & some smoothing of the saddles seems to have greatly improved the tuning stability - I dont think i'l replace the tuners.
The electronics work was junk though, mega poor soldering - I gutted the whole lot & started again - not necessary, but at least It wont fail on me (hopefully, heh) _________________ http://www.hamptonguitartech.co.uk/

Mine had the three way switch fail when it was in the shop so they'd replaced it with a nice strong dimarzio one. I always open my guitars up and resolder them, i have a stock of these old matsumoto 555k pots that sound incredible and always work fantastically so they went straight in!
The standard pick-ups look roughly the same size as p90's, i might have a measure up tonight and see if a p90 will fit, if it will i'll get one of the dimarzio soapbar tonezones!

P90's would sound lovely in a semi-solid I suspect the routs are not far off actually - that's probably the best way to go - you could then improv some foam supports for the height adjustment. _________________ http://www.hamptonguitartech.co.uk/
