anybody got some nice Seymour duncan JB/59s laying around? or some dimarzios? bareknuckles?

For your style i wouldnt go JB. Try the seymour distortion, thats a great pick-up. Dimarzio's are probably my favourite for high gain tones, check out the new petrucci liquifire, massively chunky but still smooth enough to carry the gain. Not really a fan of bareknuckles, they always sound a bit flubby and loose to me.
Its also worth looking up Wizard pickups, they're all scatterwound tone monsters, its a great way of getting more output but keep the sound of the wood in your guitar.
I dont like the tone of 81s in the bridge and the guitar im swapping pups in hasnt been routed out for batteries etc. Id prefer to keep it passive if i can man.

Nothing that'll fit, most of the stuff i have at the moment is mini humbucker/p90 sized.

The lead guitarist in my band just swapped out his DiMarzio (think it was a D Activator) for a PRS Tremonti and the difference is incredible. The output is about the same, but it's he's taken a layer of foam off the front of his amp.
I always thought the DiMarzio was pretty muddy (in fact they all seem like that to me, I can't stand any of them), but this PRS is just so much more articulate and defined. It screams like a motherfucker as well. I'd never heard a PRS p'up out of a PRS before, and I've got to say I'm seriously impressed.
If you buy a "metal" guitar with Duncans, it'll have a JB in the bridge. They're the standard high-gain pickup for a reason, and they clean quite nicely too.

it depends what Dimarzio it was though mind....its not a fair assumption to say that all Dimarzios are muddy when in fact you have only heard the one, thanks for the input though. I didnt know you could get PRS pups aftermarket.
My band's other guitarist uses a Seymour trembucker in an S series and it really seems to punch the tone out. My Ibanez has an EMG 85 in the bridge and an 81 in the neck too, but im looking to chuck some new pups in a schecter c1 +, so im being dragged towards seymours and dimarzios atm. il have to check a bunch out and see what i can find, was just wondering if anyone had anything laying around? x _________________ gettin dem bare tonez.

I swapped out the guff pups in my Epiphone SG for a JB in the bridge and a distortion in the neck. The JB is fucking awesome, and I love the sound of it. The distortion in the neck was a bit of a mistake, but if you play sludge or doom or something, it's fucking insanely powerful.
I was considering the JB in my Ibanez bridge too - the tone is just great from them. _________________
I just find JB's a bit sterile now, so many guitars come with them stock that the sound is now just a bit too standard for me. I prefer dimarzio's to most after market pickups, they seem to deliver a quality that i havent heard from most production seymours. The new JP set is absolutely incredible, superbly balanced and will cover a huge amount of ground. You can hear the clarity, punch and quality in this vid:
(and olly, if you're looking for a new head, you'll dig the sound of that Jet City 100, basically its an SLO clone designed by Mike himself, I've played the 20 watter and was impressed, but my friends in the states reckon that the 100watter is a real killer, they're available over here for around £900 i think)

And nice one timmy! i was always curious about those heads. Just so happens that within the last couple of days ive racked me up an endorsement with ENGL, so im looking into getting something from them next month. Looking at a Powerball and a Fireball 100. Fireball 100 seems pretty ideal as far as features go (i know the Standard Fireball sounded good but it aint practical due to shared EQ and gain stages, whereas the 100 has seperate for each channel)....but then im a bit of a sucker for the powerball although it seems a bit too much for what im looking for...decisions decisions...
had any experiences with these tim?

They're both pretty good heads, i prefer the voicing of the old fireball to the new 100w version. New blackface powerballs are good, so much better than the v1 powerballs. They can still tend to get lost in the mix because the midrange on engls is never very pronounced. Check out the Blackmore if you want an Engl with ultimate clarity and grunt! If you can get away with the shared EQ on the 60w Fireball, thats what i'd go for (shared EQ isnt a bad thing, i love it on my Laney), the old fireballs sound raw and super destructive, plus they're more reliable.
One of the biggest faults with the engls is PCB mounted valve sockets, it means that as valves get older and the bias slips, the solder tags on the valve sockets can become dry and you end up blowing the power section to the whole amp, the fireball 60 doesnt have PCB mounted sockets, because it only has the two power valves, they're on a separate board. I wouldnt worry about the volume, 60watts of fireball will shit all over 150w of rectifier or 120w of 5150. You can get pristine sparkley cleans and super metal distortion easily because the gain controls are not stacked (like they are on my laney).
If you use the clean channel as much as you do the drive, go for a powerball, if its all about drive, go for the 60w fireball, you wont be disappointed. I've actually had a Fireball through that Framus cab too, it sounded fucking angry!
