Im working on a project and one of the ideas is to use a vocal sample, however this sample has music in the background. The other one i wanted to use has background noise.
Im able to cut the file down to the amount that i need but want to get rid of everything other than the vocal.
Is it possible to isolate the vocals from everything eles ? is there software out there that anyone knows of ?
Many thanks. _________________ The figure stands expressionless, impassive and alone!!!

If the vocal sample is from a piece of music, it's not that hard to get pretty good results:
Firstly, you need to find a Mid-side (M-S) editor (rather than the normal L-R). Then you remove all the side, so you're left with just the sounds in the centre of the stereo field - basically you're removing anything that only appears in one channel. As vocals are generally centred, they appear equally in both left and right channels.
That generally leaves you with vocals, kick drum, bass and snare (and some cymbals etc.). You can get rid of a lot of that by high-passing the track (cutting out all the low frequencies). Then you have to try and pick out the higher frequencies that are left and take out as much as you can without wrecking the presence/sibilance of the vocals.
ok well, the sample i wanted to use was a video converted to an mp3 file. Or i can do it as a wav which ever is easier to seperate ?
Theres, no kick drum or bass in the file. Its just a vocal and a couple of synths. Would this be better then trying to sperate from an acuall song with all the usaull layers ??
Many thanks. _________________ The figure stands expressionless, impassive and alone!!!
It's not so much what the sounds are, as where they are. Like Steve says, the idea is to isolate the centre of the mix (where the vocal usually is) and remove the sides. (So if the vocals are centered and the synths aren't, it's worth a go. Otherwise it's not going to work.)
Always work with the highest quality audio file you can get. (WAV, not MP3).
I just came across this shareware program which sounds worth a try - can do vocal isolation and vocal removal. (They're closely related.)
And if all else fails, send it to these guys - they seem to have nailed it. They're not letting anyone else get their hands on the software yet though.
