Probably the wrong forum and im sorry, but im thinking of buyin some new pick ups and Im thinkin between these, but wondered on peoples opinions???
I hear that they're the same except for the HZ's are more passive, and are a bit gash...any thoughts? _________________ I find great amusement in the consequences of my actions!
81's and 85's are an active pickup, so pots and jack will need replacing too.
The HZ's are passive, so they work like regular magnetic pick ups.
the active 80 series have quite a compressed dynamic range but have loads of output, which is why theyre popular for metal.
The HZ's emulate that but have better mid response.
It dpends on the guitar its going in, string guage , tuning and all that really. personally i'd go dimarzio or seymour duncan, you'll get better tone for the money.
It really depends, i think they quote about 16 hours of use, you also have to unplud your jack when you're not using the guitar as the switch for the power is in the jack.
ok, so what is the difference then really between active and passive?
Metal players tend to like the huge output from active pickups, because it overdrives the pre-amp stage of your amplifier, giving more saturated gain at lower volumes. Active pickups are also much quieter because they dont use a constant magnetic field, to sense the string vibration. The downside is the narrow frequency response, they also sound very sterile and clinical, some players like that but its not ideally suited to some styles.
Most players go for standard passive humbuckers as they dont lose the character of the guitar. You can get a similar level of output but you will have increased noise, but i always find passives more responsive and better tone wise.
What guitar are you using and what kind of sounds are you trying to acheive? If you name a few bands guitar sounds that you like i could recommend some pickups to get you into that sort of zone.

Im currently using a Tanglewood Les Paul copy and am aiming for a thrash punk/punk rock sound, like Rancid, leftover crack, Star Fucking Hipsters, F-Minus sound. My current pickups are some standard make called 'Darkstar' and are pretty dull! _________________ I find great amusement in the consequences of my actions!

You probably want passives then. Cant really go too wrong with the seymour JB or for a bit more kick the Dimebucker. Dimarzio super distortion is another fave of punk guitarists because of its warmth and hot sound.

theres lots of good 7-string humbuckers out there, i'd recommend dimarzio or emg. Dont be fooled into paying loads for boutique pick-ups, you'll only end up disappointed.
Its also worth speaking to the guys at Bare Knuckle Pick-ups, they're making a lot of custom designs for Blackmachine guitars, so they can cater for 7/9/10 and specialist baritones.
