you dont know how tight it would be to get three vocal mics into our van, the luggage store was built exactly for our gear, there really isnt any room for three more boxes or another case full of mics and leads!
3 of them, plus a few leads is really going to make your van bulge at the seams

Last night, not only did every mic that was put in my hand fall to pieces within seconds...
You could fit three SM58s inside a normal sized lunch box (in their little sleeves, obviously), and three XLR leads inside a small child's satchel.
NO EXCUSES TIM
I just dont see why we should take mics! Not when in four years its the only place we've had a problem, especially when the venue claims to have them. Thats the point. Should i also take a generator and 4 gallons of red diesel, just incase the power at venue fails? Should i take a spare set of PA speaker cables incase theirs fail? Should i take spare fuses for their monitor amp? Spare bulbs for their lighting rig? We arent Metallica, we dont have a fleet of lorries to carry our gear, we're five guys in a merc sprinter.
You couldnt get 3 decent quality 25ft XLR leads into a lunchbox, you'd need something along the lines of a what i use for my guitar kit, theres no point in transporting them unless theyre transported correctly.

Surely for that exact reason? You're guaranteed a problem sooner or later at some random venue, you can't assume they'll all have good mics even if you've done 4 years of trouble-free touring.

Well if we're being facetious then why not, eh? If you bother to take your own guitar to play through your own amp, why shouldn't you take your own mics that you're comfortable using, are certain work properly and haven't been shoved up some emo kid's sweaty arse flaps?

I said the mics, not the leads...
Pondering these exchanges I've realised something obvious I missed - How many people consider mics part of the PA rig and not the singer's own personal bit of gear? For me, if it's a vocal mic it's the singer's responsibility to bring their own if they have one, to use instead of the venue's - just like a guitarist or bassist brings their own axe. All other mics (57's, drum mics etc.) are part of the PA. Anyone agree? _________________

I agree not totally, but when you're told you dont need them and space is at a premium then we're not going to bring them. One of the other bands had brought along a couple of mics, but they were told they didnt need them.
Whats your rule for an acoustic performer then? Someone who uses a proper acoustic guitar without a transducer? Is the guitar mic part of his problem or is it the venue/promoter? Its the same with drums, should drummer bring their own set of mics? Its a hazy line Chim!

If you want to use your own gear, then bring it along. If you don't, you get to sample the house gear which will obviously be variable in quality (and housing dangerous bacterial colonies in microphone spit guards in this case).

It is hazy indeed!
Hmm...drum mics are the responsibility of the venue. The acoustic guitarist should stop being such a pussy, plug in an Explorer and rock the fuck out.
(Actually I'd say that the acoustic mic was probably the venue's jurisdiction, but if I was the player I'd bring my own along just in case they a) didn't have one or b) had a shit one, in which case we're back to my original point). _________________

So why are drum mics the responisbility of the venue and the vocal mics not?

Because as I said above, I consider the vocal microphone to be the singer's 'instrument' - the interface we use instead of a guitar/bass/drums, and as such their responsibility. Instrument and drum mics, to me, are part of the PA.
I dunno, I can't explain it but there is a difference! _________________

at the end of the day if you don`t take your own gear you don`t know what you are going to get so any one WITH ANY FUCKING SENSE especially a lead singer . would take their own . and to say you cant fit 3 mics in a van is fucking rediculous . If you don`t take your own tough shit in my opinion.
I know exactley what Charley and Em would say ...."bring your fucking own then"
The reason you should take a vocal mic and not all the others is:
a) hygiene. Imagine how many people have been using that mic!!
b) they tend to get alot more battered than the other mics
And anyway. A proper touring band with a Sound Engineer will take all their own mics and leads. A lot of smaller bands just take vocal mics for the above reasons and the fact they are affordable. Unlike some guitar and drum mics!
