Basically I reformatted my computer a while back but since doing this I have lost a second hard drive (no longer showing up in My Computer) and plus my re-writeable disc drive is not showing up?
I don't have any discs to reinstall them with and not sure about anyway around it
I'm really not that great at computers so any help is much appreciated! Very Happy

It may well be something like your BIOS is not set up correctly but I can't be sure. When you boot the computer up the will be an option flash up like "Setup - F8", if you press F8 you will get to the BIOS setup menu, the will a drive option (usually the first one). Go on that and then there will be a choice to auto scan for devices, I think it will be F3, this should bring up all of the connected drives. If the drives are shown on here then exit and save from BIOS. If they aren't it is likely to be some sort of connection problem with your computer or a dodgy motherboard.
If the computer still doesn't show them in Windows (I am guessing you have Windows) then it could be that your drives aren't recognised. Go to Start>Control Panel>Add Hardware, you can thendo an auto searchg to try and find anything new. If that doesn't work then go into the 'System' option in Control Panel, then the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager. You can then look at the disk drives to see if they have somehow been disabled or need new drivers.
Hope this helps.

Probably not BIOS settings as he was able to re-install Windows in the first place.

My guess is the extra HDD isn't active. Check by right-clicking My Computer > Manage and click on Device Manager on the left. It'll list all your hardware and any that isn't installed properly will be marked. Let use know what's marked and we'll go from there.

If the HDD isn't active, click on Disk Management (instead of Device Manager) and it'll show your HDDs and partitions on them. Lets us know what it displays there.

tried all of the above but still nothing im afraid. I havent disconnected the hard drive or the CD burner drive since reformatting and was working fine before I reformatted so can't understand it!
The only thing that was marked on the device manager was an old wireless usb driver that I don't use anymore
No luck with the BIOS settings and couldnt find the hardware I was looking for on 'add hardware' either unfortunatly
On disk management it just came up with C: and D: which is just my normal hard drive and my one DVD Rom im assuming
Anymore ideas guys?

Are they PATA or SATA drives? (PATA being the old school grey ribbon cable type and SATA being the new (usually red cable) small connector type.

If they're not displayed in the BIOS then they're either not plugged in properly or if they're PATA and both drives on the cable are set to 'Master' instead of 'Master' and 'Slave'.

If they do display on the BIOS, are they in device manager (installed properly)?

Yep, I think some more digging in Device Manager is what you need at the moment. Are you running XP...? Expand the entries for things like:

DVD/CD-ROM Drives
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Disk drives

...and list what's there. I'd probably check the type of motherboard, go to their website and download the latest drivers, plus XP SP3.
