just a quick question. if i have a speaker which is 225 watts RMS at 8 ohms, when buying an amp to match the speakers, how much higher should i go in terms of watts per channel? ive had a look on the net and some places say double and some say 1.5 times so that your amp isn't running at its limit. will it matter much if i go for either one or is either rule of thumb better?
hope that makes sense. _________________ no explanation marks allowed

Usually if you are running you PA to it`s limit then it`s probably not man enough for the job .
you want to tailor your pa to the average size of venue you use it in.To give you some idea we have pretty small rooms 12` x 12` and we have 400w speakers on 220w per side stereo amp so 440w amp . these sound awesome and if you turn it up to max you`ll fry your ears . Running at 50% these run very well in the small room adnd wont hurt your ears or the rig (but still drive 130db)
an average pub will take that sort of setup anything bigger than a small pub and you`ll need somthing thats at least a 1k rig really or you`ll just end up thrashing it .
somthing the size of the brickmakers / waterfront for instance you`ll need somthing 4 - 6k . Not for the power but for clarity and so you don`t fry the rig. A big rig turned down will always sound better than a thrashed small rig and will of course last a lot longer

not to seem rude but im aware of everything you've said.
what im asking is so that i dont run my speakers or amplifier at there limit, how much bigger an amp should i get in terms of watts per channel on the amp and RMS on the speakers? _________________ no explanation marks allowed

lol.....sorry mate , i did sort of answer your question ......our speakers are actually about the same the size as the amp but they don`t get used at more than 50% .....it doesn`t matter too much what amp you put on them as long as you don`t turn it up to it`s max ...which you should never do with a pa anyway . If you put 200w pa speaker on a 600w amp then you are gonna blow the speakers . If you do the oposite you will push the amp to the limit ...just balance it out a bit and don`t turn it up to the max. for your speakers i wold go for somthing 350 - 450w keep the amp below 75% and you`ll be good and if you need it louder buy bigger speaker rather than turn it up is kinda what i was trying to say.
