I've just got myself a midi keyboard but i'm getting really bad latency. It's usually around 125ms, but sometimes goes up to as much as 500... I'm using Cubase SX and i've got a pretty decent soundcard (an Edirol UA-25). I've tried changing the buffer size but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Could it be something to do with my RAM? I've got 760mb...

I see from that bit of kit that it uses USB. Do you have USB2 ports in your PC? Also, what spec is your PC? Latency can be caused by old machine hardware not being up to the job.
The other things could be drivers for the UA25. Did you get them from the manufacturer and are they the newest drivers available?
RAM latency would be miles faster than any kind of audio latency - RAM latency is measured in cycles (instructions per second, equivalent to 1Hz). A 1Ghz processor can compute 1 billion instructions per second) so RAM with a latency of 10 for example (pretty high) would give rise to the CPU experiencing a delay in receiving a piece of data from RAM once in every 100 million requests.
It's more likely that your processor is tied up with other tasks. Make sure you aren't running other background processes.

If you are using USB, don't bother - the latency will never be low enough to use it properly.
Before you start getting into hardware issues though, it's best to check all the drivery stuff.
What type of drivers are you using for the Edirol? If they're ASIO (which I think they will be with that sound card), then you can normally set the latency manually (not sure where the option is in Cubase, but I think it's got an external ASIO settings panel anyway, if you check the Start Menu). Make sure you're using the ASIO driers for the soundcard too, and not 'ASIO Multimedia' or whatever it's called.
It might be worth trying switching to a WDM driver instead - sometimes they're better, sometimes they're not.
How do you know what your latency is? I never use Cubase so I can't remember what readings there are - if it was a CPU issue, you'd see spikes in the CPU metre when you stated using the keyboard. The RAM shouldn't be an issue unless you're trying to record on a project with lots of tracks/VSTs.

Cheers for the help dudes. I've got it sorted now.
I was using the 'ASIO Multimedia' drivers, which was causing the latency. It's all fine now.
I am still getting latency with the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth thingy, but i'll just find a similar VSTi i can use.
That's still not great - your main driver should be either the ASIO driver for your card (which the Edirol defintely has) or WDM. The MS Wavetable thing is only the MIDI driver, not your soundcard driver - there should be a MIDI driver for the Edirol too, which will be far better.
