| Album Reviews: Megiddo ? ?Bloodshed and Underdogs? |
Meggido are a four-piece metal band. This CD was recently featured in Metal Hammer?s demo page, scoring a healthy 7/10 and described as ?Full-on f*ck off death metal?.
Track Listing:
1 ? Bloodshed and Underdogs
2 ? Of Man
3 ? Ruin
4 ? In This Hell
The first thing that really struck me about this CD happens about 40 seconds into the second track ? either they?re going for levels of dissonance that would make Meshuggah tremble, or somebody forgot to tune his bass guitar. The low stuff is fine, but the higher strings just aren?t quite right.
Aside from that, the sound of this CD is generally good. The drum sound is perfect for the music (the harsh, metallic snare especially) and they?re well played, though possibly a bit high in the mix; at times they threaten to swamp the guitars. However, the guitar sound is really nice - a perfect example of what can be achieved by just rolling back the distortion a notch so there?s still some clarity. For a band with one guitarist there seems to be quite a lot of overdubs though. The bass, other than the aforementioned tuning issue, is nice and gargley, and plays a surprisingly big part in the overall sound. As for the vocals, I think Metal Hammer summed it up quite nicely: ?? towards the end of ?Of Man? it?s questionable as to whether singer Jae Hadley isn?t just ad-libbing ?blurgh, blurgh, bluuurgh, dworgh, glaaaaaa??. Personally, I prefer my vocals a bit more comprehendible, but they sound nice and meaty the whole way through the CD, with a little variation here mixing things up. I have to say though, that in the middle of ?Ruin? it does sound like the singer is struggling to keep up with the band.
The riffs are simple, which can be a good thing ? but only if your riffs are memorable. After listening to this CD a few times, I couldn?t remember any of them, which is a shame coming away from a CD of riff-based music.
Not much to pick out song wise, like the majority of these bands all those but the most dedicated fans would have trouble distinguishing them ? and ultimately, for me at least, that?s the biggest downfall of this CD. There?s nothing here that I haven?t heard before on a Lamb Of God or Shadows Fall album, and no signs of experimentation whatsoever. Whether or not that?s a bad thing is up to you ? it works for Motorhead doesn?t it?
