| Album Reviews: 64 Stitches ? ?Fire Kills Children? |
Not ones to stray from the pop-punk rulebook, 64 Stitches are a three-piece, currently starting to make a name for themselves around Norwich, and getting one of these tracks (?Couple Most Likely To F*ck Up? I believe) included on a Europe-wide compilation.
Track Listing:
1 ? Couple Most Likely To Fuck Up
2 ? Hot 4 A Knight
3 ? U?ll c ;)
4 ? As It Happens
5 - Clean Cut By 30
This is a band that knows what it?s doing. The songs are short and snappy (only one clocks in at over 3 minutes); all have virtually identical structures, and have copious amounts of ?whoa-oh? style harmonies. Having said that, these songs are catchy enough to stay in your head for a while, even if some of the titles make me cringe (since when did punk start FOLLOWING trends like text-speak? I mean, plz). They have a few tricks up their sleeves too. There are a few tasteful guitar solos that many metal bands would be proud of, some nifty bass work, and easily the best punk drumming in The Fine City ? just check out the blast beat on ?Clean Cut By 30?, it would fit into a Slayer song, let alone pop-punk! The lyrics cover the usual pop-punk topics (girls, breaking up, heroes selling out), but they?re well written.
The recording isn?t great. The guitars are fuzzy rather than biting, and the low bass notes tend to disappear - especially annoying as the bass provides most of the musicality to the songs. As seemingly required by law nowadays, there are a few screams, but they sound tacked on and don?t blend with the rest of the music. The drum sound is pretty solid, though I wish there was a bit more bass in the bass drum ? it clicks more than it thumps, but that?s the price you pay for that much double bass drum work. The vocals are good, and the melodies are spot on and blend well.
All in all, a good CD by one of the best punk bands I?ve heard in Norwich. It?s also worth noting that they?re incredibly tight ? it makes a huge difference to the quality. There are huge echoes of Pennywise in some of the riffs (see ?Hot 4 A Knight?), but who cares if you can hum the song afterwards?
