| Album Reviews: Your Loss ? ?Louder Than Loud? |
For this three-piece rock band, quite a chunk of this year has been spent gigging all over the country. They?ve been around for a few years now, and this is their third EP.
Track Listing:
1 ? Start Over
3 ? Louder Than Loud
4 ? Oblivious
5 ? Lacuna
Well I have to be honest; I?m a bit confused. The only real mention of the CD on the band?s website says the whole thing is on MySpace ? but I download them to find the track numbers above. On further investigation, it seems there are actually 6 tracks on the EP, but I can?t find any other information on it than that. So obviously I?m only reviewing the four I?ve got (which is probably cheating slightly).
The tracks I DO have all sound really good. The recording is very full ? it sounds much bigger than most of the local bands I?ve heard. The instruments all sound good, both the bass and guitars sounding clear and warm, though the brief acoustic guitar parts are a bit thin in comparison. The drums in particular are nice, the toms sounding especially musical. The vocals are well recorded too, though I?m not massively keen on the singer?s voice. It puts me in mind of Dryden Mitchell (Alien Ant Farm), though not as high and with a less pronounced vibrato. There are some nice vocal harmonies too, though some are lost a bit in the mix.
In fact, the whole band reminds me a bit of Alien Ant Farm ? just listen to the chorus of ?Oblivious? ? though with a distinctly English edge. Maybe there?s a touch of Million Dead in their quieter moments too. Although grounded firmly in the modern rock category, there are quite a few other influences going on here. The songs all sound different, but are all definitely Your Loss songs. Lyrically it?s a bit clich?d (take ?Run as fast as you can/whilst you still can? from ?Louder Than Loud? or ?It takes two to tango baby/and one to break our hearts? from ?Oblivious?). The numerous gigs have clearly paid off too, because they?re tight as hell.
Somehow, even with their extensive gigging, I?ve never seen this band live ? but based on this CD I probably would. My only concern would be the amount of guitar overdubs on some of the tracks; I?m not sure how much it would affect them to be stripped down to a three-piece. All in all though, this is a solid CD well worth checking out.
