| Album Reviews: The New Reversal ? demo |
The New Reversal is a three-piece indie outfit whose frontman has enough side-projects to make Mike Patton look slack. They have the dubious honour of being the first band to ask me for a review for this; their first demo.
Track Listing:
1 ? Wires And Amps
2 ? Romeo
3 ? Pergamum
4 ? Vanity Fair
I don?t know much about this band ? I couldn?t even find out the name of this CD from MySpace, and their website didn?t work ? so I?m flying blind really. I?m going to be a bit presumptuous and guess that they haven?t been together for long, because they?re quite loose in places.
The tracks sound good. The bass drum is a little bit sharp for the music, but other than that they?re nicely mix. The guitars generally sound okay, though the cleaner sections still break up a bit ? personally, I?d prefer it if they were completely clean. There are some completely clean parts though, and they sound a bit lacking, so maybe it was a compromise. The bass guitar sounds really nice, and the playing is great ? there are some really nice bass lines, especially the one towards the end of ?Vanity Fair?. I wish it was a bit louder in places, but it?s still audible. The vocals are pretty well recorded too, though I?m not overly keen on the lead singer?s voice. He?s somewhat Americanised (though in fairness I think he was born Texas), and over-emphasises in places, sounding a bit like Daron Malakian (System OF A Down). Though predominantly an indie-rock band the vocals sound more suited to an emo band; they?re shrieked out and occasionally not very tuneful. On the last track someone else sings (the bass player I?m guessing), though it?s more speaking-to-the-tune than anything. In comparison, he sounds very English.
There?s nothing really wrong with these songs, though as I said before if they were a bit tighter it would give the songs a better impact. There are a lot of different sections to many of the songs that don?t always work well together, and the quality of them goes up and down quite a bit, but overall they?re perfectly listenable. When I read that they were an indie band I cringed slightly, picturing some of the awful New Wave bands that have flooded the market in recent years, but I was pleasantly surprised that The New Reversal, instead of flouncing about claiming to have invented a sound that?s 20 years old (see the Kaiser Chiefs/The Bravery/The Strokes et al), are actually concentrating on writing catchy rock songs. Given a bit more time, when the song writing is a bit neater and the playing is a bit tighter, they?ll be pretty solid band.
